Furbush's Co, 13th Reg NH Vols; enlisted by Lewis H Buzzell of the 13th Reg of
NH Vols at Nottingham NH on 26 Aug 1862 for 3 years; Holmes was b at Randolph
NH, and is ae 30; 6"1", light complexion, blue eyes, light hair; a shoemaker;
Holmes has been unfit for service for the past two months; he was in the Battle
of Fredericksburg 13 Dec 1862 where he received internal injuries, and has not
done any service since; signed by Capt G A Furbush near Portsmouth VA 24 Sep
1863; Holmes was examined by John Sullivan, Asst Surgeon, on 2 Oct 1863 at Camp
Gilmore near Portsmouth VA who reported that he suffered from chronic
inflamation of the liver caused by injuries sustained at the Battle of
Fredericksburg on 13 Dec 1862; that he was unable to walk without much pain,

require Hosea Q Tuttle to produce the will of the late Stoten S Tuttle because

  1876 Oct 11 - the will of Stoten S Tuttle was proved.  The will provided for
Dexter M Tuttle & Hosea Q Tuttle, but not Lucia A Holmes.  The will had been

  1881 Apr 1 - Nottingham: Miss Nora Holmes, who is stopping at Portsmouth, si
sick with German measles [Exeter News-Letter of this data].
  1881 May 20 - West Nottingham: "Our Neighbor, Mr. Noah Holmes, was taken
sick one day last week, buy bleeding, it is thought, from the lungs.  We hope
in our next to report his partial recovery" [Exeter News-Letter of this date].  
   1881 Aug 19 - Nottingham: "Mr Noah Holmes has been spending a few days at
Portsmouth for a rest after haying." [Exeter News-Letter of this date].
  1881 Sep 2 - Nottingham: "Mr Noah Holmes has gone to visit in Haverhill,
Mass, for a few days." [Exeter News-Letter of this date].
  1885 - Noah W Holmes' application for a new pension certificate shows that
he was residing in East Northwood NH at that time [CW Pension file of Noah W
Holmes].
  1885 Jun 15 - Noah W Holmes applied for a duplicate certificate stating that
his house had burned on this date [CW Pension file of Noah W Holmes].
  1885 Jun 19 - Nottingham: The house of Noah Holmes in this place was
destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon.  Mr Holmes and his family were away at
the time, so only a few household goods were saved.  A considerable quantity of
clothing, and about seventy-five dollars in money were burned.  As the
buildings were uninsured, there is a heavy loss [E N-L].  Several subsequent
issues of the paper were searched, but no further mention of the family was
found.  Perhaps this was the point at which they moved to the house on Green
Street in Northwood.

funeral was held at his residence on Sunday, and was largely attended

interment took place in the family cemetery with services by Charles A Hoitt

  1889 Jul 17 - Nottingham NH: affidavit of John L Holmes ae 46 and John D
Daniels ae 50, former members of NH 13th Vols, states that Noah W Holmes was a
priv in the NH 13th Vols; that he drew a pension of $8/mo until his death; that
he died from internal injuries to his left side below the ribs which he

  1889 Jul 17 - affidavit of John M Tuttle ae 45 and George W Jenness ae 53,
both of Nottingham states they are intimate friends of Noah W Holmes, and have
known him for 30 yrs; they say he was married to Lucia A Tuttle on 4 Mar 1865
according to the Nottingham Town Records; that his widow, Lucia, has not
remarried since his death; that prior to his death he could not lift anything;
that his side would bulge out the size of a man's fist at the location of his

of Nottingham NH states that they knew Noah W Holmes for 30 yrs; that they
examined the family Bible now in the possession of Lucia A Holmes and found the
following births recorded to Lucia A & Noah W Holmes: Nora V Holmes b 18 Mar
1867, and Forrest E Holmes b 25 Apr 1871; that NWH & LAH never lost any
children by death; that they were not believers in infant baptism, and hence,

  1890 Jun 1 - Fred K Stevens of East Rochester NH signed the authograph book
of Nora Viva Holmes as follows: "Remember me is all I ask; and if rememberence

  1890 Nov 7 - West Nottingham: Mrs Lenora P Ham, a respected widow lady,
passed away the 2d instant at Mrs Delia Holmes'.  She leaves one brother George
Sherburne of this town.  Interment was at Barrington where she formerly resided

   1916 Sep 23 - Declaration for Remarried Widow's Pension filed by Lucia A Ham
ae 69; states she was b 20 Mar 1847 at Nottingham NH; states she was formerly
the widow of Noah W Holmes who enlisted at Nottingham NH as a priv in Co F 13th
Reg NH Vol Inf, and was discharged 3 Oct 1863; states she married sd Holmes 4
Mar 1865 under the name Lucia A Tuttle; neither had been married previously,
and the ceremony was performed by John C Holmes; sd Holmes died 31 May 1889 at
Nottingham NH while they were still married; that she was previously pensioned
as the widow of said Holmes at $12/mo; that her pension cert ificate had been
burnt; ; that her pension right was lost when she married James Ham at
Rochester NH; that James Ham d at Rochester 3 Feb 1912; that he had no military

Glover; that she was given to a Tuttle family in Nottingham NH at age 3-4
months to raise; that she used the birth date of 20 May 1847; that she married

  1918 Jan 8 - general affidavit of Lucia A Ham of Northwood NH ae 70,
formerly widow of Noah W Holmes; made in response to a letter from the pension
commissioner dated 20 Nov 1917; "I will state that it is impossible for me to
furnish date of my birth, as there is no record of the same;" "I will I suppose
lay bare my birth which is as follows, I understand my father's name was John
Glover.  after I was born, and 3 or 4 months old, my mother gave me to a family
named Tuttle in Nottingham NH, who acted as father + mother to me until I
married Noah W Holmes, my age given me + the date of my marriage to Noah W
Holmes in 1865 was that I was ...[illegible] ...1847.  as the record of my
marriage to Noah W Holmes shows I was a few month...[illegible].  He died in
May 1889.  I married James Ham July 13th 1890.  He died in Feb 19[??] I have
not remarried since the death of James Ham.  I redided in Nottingham NH from I
was born and was living there in censuses of 1850 + 1860  This evidence has

celebrated her 85th birthday on March 20 at the home of her son Forrest E
Holmes.  Mrs Holmes and Mrs Nora Brown very pleasantly surprised her by giving
a delightful dinner in her honor at which were present four generations: Mrs L
A Ham, F E Holmes, Noah Holmes & Miss Patricia LaFranc ae 10 Mos; also five
generations, including Mrs L A Ham, Nora Brown, Mrs Lester Buzzell, Mrs Harold
Burklund, & Miss Marlene Burklund ae 4 wks; aside from her being somewhat hard
of hearing Mrs Ham is in excellent health; she greatly enjoys art needle work
and has created some truly remarkable pieces [Exeter News-Letter circa this

  1932 Dec 18 - Mrs Ada B Geere or Geers signed a receipt acknowledging
payment of $30 for professional services rendered to Mrs L Ham; paid by Forrest
Holmes [CW Pension file of Noah W Holmes].
  1932 Dec 23 - Northwood News: "Once again has the silent reaper entered our
community and removed from our midst Mrs Lucia Ham.  Mrs Ham passed away at the
home of her son, Forrest E Holmes, Sunday night, at the advanced age of 85
years.  With the exception of poor hearing this very estimable woman has
enjoyed the best of health until within a few weeks.  She has always done very
fine needle work and only this year was winner of many prizes at the Grange
[fair] for her work.  Mrs. ham was always a kind neighbor and friend - a true
mother to her own and mankind as well.
  She is survived by one daughter, Mrs Nora V Brown, and one son, Forrest E
Holmes; four grandchildren, four great grand children, and one great great
grandchild.
  The Funeral services will be held at the Baptist Church, Wednesday at two
PM.  Burial is to be at North Side Cemetery in Nottingham [Exeter News-Letter
of 23 Dec 1932].

Ham died of bronchitis and old age while living with her son Forrest in

and he removed to Haverhill MA where he worked on automobiles, and she later
married Jeremiah Chesley.  My mother remembers "Aunt Vinie" as an old lady.  
   According to an elderly lady from Nottingham, Will Glover was a black-
smith, and went to Haverhill, MA where he and a brother-in-law named Ellison?
operated a garage.

they div in MA?
